PSY 005 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Resource Depletion, Psych, Behaviorism
Document Summary
Scientific study of the effects of social and cognitive processes on the way individuals perceive, influence and relate to others. Scientific study = (less subject to biases that characterise common-sense knowledge) Social processes - the ways in which other people influence peoples understanding of the world and guide their actions. Affect us even when others are not physically present. When people are present = depends on how we interpret those others or their actions (cognitive processes) Cognitive processes - memories, perceptions, thoughts, emotions & motives - influence understanding of the word & guide actions. Integration of basic science and social problems: Global threats - resource depletion, environmental pollution, overpopulation = profound changes in human behaviour. Health: stress, emotions, love, addiction, grief, illness. Law: enforce laws, weigh evidence, distribute justice. Two fundamental axioms: (axiom = proposition that is true without proof)
