Suspensory ligament - anchors ovary laterally to pelvic wall. Suspensory ligament and mesovarium part of broad ligament supports uterine tubes, uterus, and vagina. Blood supply - ovarian arteries and ovarian branch of the uterine arteries. Inner medulla - large blood vessels and nerves. Figure 27. 14 internal reproductive organs of a female, posterior view. Primordial follicle single layer of follicle cells + oocyte. More mature follicles several layers of granulosa cells. Vesicular (antral or tertiary) follicle fully mature follicle. Fluid-filled antrum forms; follicle bulges from ovary surface. Corpus luteum develops from ruptured follicle after ovulation. Oocyte cast into peritoneal cavity; some lost there. Receive ovulated oocyte; usual site of fertilization. Isthmus - constricted region where tube joins uterus.
