Freud : dreams do have meaning to freud: wishful fulfillment like sex, dreams express unconscious motives and wishes, manifest content is the story of the dream. Latent content is the motivation behind the dream, the unconscious making itself heard in an undisguised way: criticisms, universality of symbols questionable, no simple recipe for dream interpretation. Problem solving view: dreams trying to solve problems to waking life. Biological view: brian fire from the inside out when dreaming (activation- sythesis model, dreams are the by product of random neural firing emerging from deep (subcortical) areas of the brain, sleep deprivation. Impaired concentration and cognitive performance: emotional centres of the brain more reactive: mood problems, misperccceptions during monotonous tasks, zoning out. Why we need sleep: to maintain a healthy brain, repair damaged cells, replenish energy stores, grow new neurons, to consolidate memory and learn, to maintain psychological health.
