Aim: maladaptive behaviours involves faulty learning or faulty associations and the therapist helps to unlearn these associations. Classical conditioning in behaviour therapy: e(cid:454)posure therap(cid:455) (cid:894)(cid:862)fa(cid:272)e (cid:455)our fears(cid:863)(cid:895): use of habituation. Systematic desensitization (1958 wolpe): a type of exposure therapy that desensitizes the patient through a systematic step-by-step manner. Used for turning somebody off from something that is harmful. For example: alcohol abusers would be turned off by alcohol after experiencing an aversive response. Paired with shock or emetics (something that makes you feel sick or something that makes you feel nauseous) Counter conditioning: going against what has previously been learned replacing one response with another. Phobia: substituting fear with relaxation (impossible to feel fear when relaxed) Aversive conditioning: substituting a pleasant response with an unpleasant one.
