Behaviour therapy (any therapy based on learning principles) Aim - maladaptive behaviours involve faulty learning, the aim of therapy is to help unlearn these associations. Systematic desensitization ( procedure:setup an anxiety hierarchy ,relaxes patient imagines items in hierarchy while relaxed. Phobias (implosion therapy)(imagine) - induce anxiety, prevent ,escape and see that the phobic stimulus doesnt cause aversive consequences. Replace pleasant response with an aversive response to a harmful stimulus. Aversive stimulus - shock or an anctic (makes u feel nausious) Phobia- substituting fear or anxiety with an incompatible response that being relaxation. Use of operant conditioning in behaviour therapy: behaviour modification. Positive stimulus given for desired behaviours but withheld for undesirable ones: token economy. Cognitive therapy - attempt to alter a persons feelings and behaviours by first changing their maladaptive thoughts or beliefs , aka their cognitions.
