Tools and strategies developed by beings to solve problems and complete tasks. Moving beyond the material: tech as physical objects: tools, machines, instruments, weapons. Our most common understanding: tech as knowledge: the know-how behind an invention. Why is this tech created in the first place: tech as a socio-technical system: interaction between humans and objects. Term can be found as early as the 17th century: used to describe industrial acts. Only popularized after wwii but tech has existed for millions of years. Terms such as practical (technical, mechanical) arts (specialty or practice), applied science, engineering, Breakdown: teks: to fabricate or weave, tekton: carpenter or builder, tekhne: to art, craft or skill. Tech is not just about focusing on revolutionary tech or great inventors . This tech will impact society in a fundamental way. Very few technologies that deserve this label. Shows connections between the new and the old. Advanced vs. less advanced in others (limited/ inaccurate view)
