Auguste comte (1798-1857) aka father of sociology. All other sociology was focused on elaborating on the idea of society rather than analyzing society as it is. Early sociologists goal: to analyse society scientifically. Before the birth of sociology, the focus was imagining what things should be. After the birth of sociology, the focus was analyzing was it actually is. Sy101: chapter 2: mutual dependence on one another, he felt that religion did a better job at promoting solidarity than the division of labour, anomie: lack of purpose, belonging *** state of low solidarity, suicide rates increase. Values: members of society share a set of values and that"s what make society. All about different functions of different groups/actions in society: functional vs dysfunctional. Conflict theory: focuses on various classes, class conflict -> studies how it looks like at different times/places. Unions/strikes/large group of ppl with a common motive. Weapons of the weak: smaller everyday elements of class conflict like stealing.
