The idea that you can apply the scientific method to the social world5. Made possible by the advances of the scientific revolution. Society was often seen as gods plan/will before this revolution. People had to obey their rules because they believed that god willed this. People create society instead of god creating society. If people create the social problems themselves, then they can solve these problems themselves (human intervention instead of divine intervention) Textbook pg 24(post-industrial revolution shift away from manufacturing mased society to information based society.
