Document Summary

The majority of people nd jobs through social networks: friends, family, social acquaintances. Experts suggest that many (most?) jobs are not advertised. Casual acquaintances may be even more important than friends and family for obtaining information about jobs. Provide you with diversity of knowledge, wide range of connections. Jobs are sometimes created for skilled individuals. Social contacts are important for rst jobs and job shifts. Importance may vary by age (as do extent of contacts) Two studies: i men are more likely than women to get jobs through contacts. Female contacts may steer women into female dominated jobs. Obvious implications for sex segregation: ii people with more job experience have better job contacts. Male contacts lead to better jobs (with better salaries) than do female contacts (especially for women) When men use women as job contacts, it does not lead to lower job quality. Thus, for women male contacts bring better job status; for men gender of contact is irrelevant.
