Work, health and wellbeing: work can both add to our health and wellbeing and detract from it. Correlates of job satisfaction: interesting and autonomous work -- self direction, complexity, diversity, social interaction -- job permits social interaction people like who they work with. Are some types of workers more satisfied than others: gender -- men and women are equally satisfied (even though their jobs differ, slightly different references: Immigrant workers -- tend to be satisfied as well. Satisfaction increases a few years after arrival: occupation/industry -- lower satisfaction associated with primary sector, manufacturing sector, health sector, overall, less alienated -- more satisfied. Workplace stress: stress: a state of tension produced by pressures of conflicting demands with which a person cannot adequately cope. Lecture notes: workers with demanding jobs, but also the ability to exercise creativity and skill on the job, and the ability to make decisions are not the most stressed.
