Individual mrfs each could promote myogenesis when expressed in fibroblasts. Fusion index: # of nuclei in muscle fiber (# of cells that fused to form this fiber: all other mrfs were also up-regulated, myod is sufficient (on its own can still get muscle) Inactivation of myod in mice leads to up-regulation of the myogenic hlh gene. Myf-5 & results in apparently normal muscle development.
