Nervous system is collection centralized and decentralized mechanisms stretched to the peripheral. Info from the body flown to the spinal cord, processed to some degree, up to the brain (info that is needed) Nervous system is not just the brain! Parts of the brain have different specializations, neuroanatomical connections, physiological basis of their actions. Outer layer: cerebral cortex: thin sheet of tissue that encompasses the brain. Colocalizing sensory information, ability to make motor outputs, ability to take sensory inputs from a variety of modalities. Integrate across all functions of brain in one localized space many creatures live without the centralized mechanism + do well: complex behaviour, flexible behaviour arises with the evolution, advent of the brain. Sea squirt: the creature that eats its own brain. Egg tadpole sea squirt finds rock (full of nutrients) + eats its own brain for energy (doesn(cid:495)t have to move, no sensory motor judgements, doesn(cid:495)t need the brain + waste its resources with it!)
