Brain is one part of the nervous system: nervous system is more than just the brain. Nervous system: collection of centralized and decentralized mechanism (stretched through to the peripheral, autonomic nervous system) Systems work together: information all flows to the spinal cord where it is processed and then it flows to the brain where the information is needed. Outer layer: cerebral cortex encompasses the brain (thin sheet that encompasses the brain) Parts of the brain have different functions and specializations, neuroconnections and they all work together. Neurons are also found in the peripheral nervous system. What is the brain for: senses and responses to the environment, for making complex judgements, centralized clustering of neurons, colocalizing sensory information. Intake sensory inputs: motor movements, complex behavior. Names can be given based on anatomy (geometry) or based on who discovers it. Primary motor cortex is within the precentral gyrus: there are many names for the same part of the tissue.
