Physiology 3120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Neuromuscular Junction, Electrical Resistance And Conductance, Chemical Synapse
Document Summary
Lecture 1: the brain, neurons and synaptic transmission. When asked what is the nervous system? , people often say. The brain is only one part of the nervous system. There are creatures that have a nervous system with brain. The nervous system is a collection of some centralized thing (e. g. brain in various creatures) but also decentralized mechanisms that are stretched out through the periphery nervous system and autonomic nervous system. Information from the body, tissues, viscera all get flowed to the spinal cord where it gets processed to some degree and all the way up to the brain for the information that is needed. Take home message: nervous system brain. Cerebral cortex on the outer layer = thin sheet of tissue that encompasses the brain (spend most of time talking about this). Other parts of the brain are equally important and interesting: basal ganglia in the brain stem, thalamus relays sensory information, cerebellum, spinal cord.
