Code: a word or phrase that represents an aspect of data (captures the essence) Theme: a categorization of codes based on trends, patterns, and relationships between codes, code frequencies, and/or underlying meaning across codes. Clusters of data with structured meaning that occur frequently/ in a pattern. Are sometime referred to as: categories, segments, thematic units, data bits, concepts. A theme is an outcome of coding. As an example, security can be a code, but a false sense of security can be a theme. Can occur during or after data collection. Could stand out while collecting data, after going through it. Can be direct text right from the data. Ex: theme time: sub-themes lack of time, preserving time, time with and without space. Emotion (theme) guilt, dread, anxiety, self-hatred (codes) Self-awareness explains all kinds of behavior. Belonging all saying i have this problem too. Coping stay aware of instant gratification monkey. Locus of control spectator of own lives.
