Qualitative: developed primarily in anthropology, sociology, and psychology, in order to explore the meanings underlying communications. Usually consist of purposively selected texts which can inform the research questions being investigated (often large quantities of text) Is a basic descriptive analysis identifying patterns/themes of expressions from subjects reflecting how they view the social world: but: begins with a hypothesis (more deductive) Deductive, in that seeking meaning is guided by prior knowledge. Inductive, in that new meaning arises from the data. Inductive: multiple themes emerge from data collected. Content analysis: commonly deductive, description of multiple patterns/themes. Concept analysis: commonly deductive, focuses on defining one concept.
