Overuse of antibiotics leads to antibiotic resistance. The drugs that have transformed life and longevity since penicillin was discovered by sir alexander fleming in 1928 now saturate every corner of our environment. We stuff them into ourselves and our animals; we spray them on crops, dump them in rivers, and evenpaint them on the hulls of boats to keep off barnacles. *superbugs on the rise because of antibiotic overuse! Medical tourism people go to another place for surgery and return home: issue/concern. Side effects: disrupt function of gi tract, nausea, diarrhea. Cannot absorb things as well due to killing of gi flora. Most take with food in order to prevent nausea. Causes 9,000 infections in hospitals/facilities each year. Nearly half of hospital patients who get cre bloodstream infections die from them. Drug-resistant gonorrhea (sti) now resists several antibiotics that used to cure it. Cdc estimates 30% of the 800,000 u. s. cases each year fit that description.
