Big one used to be mrsa, now big one is vancomycin. Tb is pretty serious infection and now we are having tb resistance. Mainstay medicines are falling in unprecedented numbers, secondary agents are nearly always more toxic, costly, and less effective. Causes 9,000 infections in hospitals/facilities each year. Drug-resistant gonorrhea (sti) now resists several abx that used to cure it. Cdc estimates 30% of the 800,000 us cases each year fit that description hospital patients who get cre bloodstream infections die from them. Clostridium difficule (c. diff) is not highly resistant to abx but does thrive. Nursing homes sometimes won"t accept people with c. diff. The bacteria cause 250,000 infections and 14,000 deaths each year.
