Document Summary
Health science 2711 lecture 7: work and retirement. Since the year 2000 labor force participation has been on the rise. For men and women 65-69, we see this increase: men 70+, slight increase, and less of an increase for women over 70+ People are entering the workforce later, therefore they may leave the workforce later. There used to be mandatory retirement at a certain age. The nature of work is less physical than it used to be, therefore people are able to stay working longer. Illegal to fire or not employ workers on basis of age. There is always loopholes and always ways that ageism still thrives. Employers can make environment uncomfortable, forcing them out. No protection for workers in which age affects job performance (police officers, firefighters, airline pilots) Ageism still exists and can create self-fulfilling prophecy. Supervisors can encounter by building self-efficacy of older workers. Retirement: withdrawal from labor force in later life.
