Labor force participation has increased for men and women 65-69. Life expectancy is on the rise, its expensive to live longer, there may be more health expenses. We had mandatory retirement at age 65 and this is no longer required. Society is now shifting, people are staying in school longer and switching careers more, its not as linear, so people are working longer. People are healthier and more able to work. Nature of work is also changing, its less physical and labor intensive so its better for aging people. Age discrimination encouraging people to retire or pushing people out. Some places do see older adults as valuable though and focus on building self efficacy of older adults. Retirement is not really an event its more accurate to think of it as a process. Anticipatory period you know retirement is looming. There are two times with highest risk of mortality at birth and soon after retirement.
