Document Summary

Purpose was to relieve workers of tedious, repetitive calculations. Facilitated the work of a single department or business function. Grew as a natural expansion of the capabilities of the calculation systems. In each functional area, companies added features and capabilities to information systems to support more functional-area activity. Problem with functional applications is their isolation: systems often called functional silos because they"re designed to work independently of one another, reality is that functional systems are inter-related. Isolation problems of functional systems led to the third era of information systems: systems were designed not only to facilitate the work of a single department or function, but also to integrate the activities across business processes. Because business activities cross departmental boundaries, such systems are sometimes called cross- departmental or cross-functional systems. Transition from functional systems to integrated cross-functional systems is difficult: integrated processing requires many departments to coordinate their activities.
