Psychosocial development is the combinaion of emoional and social development. First year: distress and content at birth. Relexive fear when startled, but not emoional or conscious. Cry when hungry/in pain/ired, happy then fed: social smile around 6 weeks, curiosity/interest, laughter at 3 4 months, anger emerges later (4 months), triggered by frustraion, fear emerges around 9 months, expressed in 2 ways. Stranger wariness: no longer smiles at any friendly faces, cry if stranger moves too close too quickly. Separaion anxiety: tears or anger when beloved caregiver leaves. Second year: fear, anger, laughing, and crying become more discriminaing and targeted, new emoions. All require self-concept and what others think. Collecivist cultures tend to develop shame and pride earlier) Fear of social events (strangers, separation from caregiver) Temperament: individual diferences in emoion, motor, and atenional reacivity and self-regulaion: primarily geneic and biological, emphasizes behaviours that difereniate one from another. Originates in genes, but inluenced by experience.
