Agenda: first grand theory of ir the realists, main assumptions, people, critiques, ***neo-realists (new realists) First one to have a coherent body of literature. Not every realist would agree with the entirety of this list! None are monoliths, there is disagreement amongst them. Realists share most of these assumptions most of the time. List comes to us modified by dr. yanezewski from one of the most famous of the realists hans. Morganthau: the science of politics, the study of war and ir all is a science, it operates according to objective and knowable laws. Gravity (we all know what"s going to happen). Ir is governed much the same way with laws: ultimate source of these laws, for most of the realists, is human nature, a specific understanding of human nature comes to the realists thanks to. The system is like that as well, prone to violence and conflict and war, distrust of neighbours, so arm yourself!
