Example: cancer, mental health, alzheimer"s, genetic diseases, side effects from pre- existing drugs. First in class: new drug target, new way to tackle the disease. Me-too drug: a drug already exists to treat the disease by addressing the same target. Has novel chemistry / potentially has less side effects. Generic drugs: same chemical, off patent (patent protection only lasts 20 years after filing) Commercial opportunity: size of market (#of patients, duration of therapy, acute or chromic targeted condition. Identification and validation of drug target: a molecule involved in the disease that the drug binds to, often inactivating it. Identification of a lead compound: potential drug candidate. Lead optimization: modification of the lead compound. Optimize to move in body well, safer, better action on their target.
