Document Summary

Cells may be interactions, or together within. Important for responding to linked by direct they may be held the extracellular matrix network of proteins and chains that the cells withstanding and various external forces. Transmission of stresses across interiors of cells from adhesion site to adhesion site: cytoskeleton of epithelial cells also linked to basal lamina through cell-matrix junctions. Two types of anchoring junctions link cytoskeletons of adjacent cells: Adherens junctions are anchorage site for actin filaments. Desmosomes are anchorage sites for intermediate filaments. Two additional types of anchoring junctions link cytoskeleton of epithelial cells to basal lamina: Actin-linked cell-matrix junctions anchor actin filaments to the matrix. Proteins of cadherin superfamily mediate attachment of cell to cell. Proteins of integrin superfamily mediate attachment of cell to matrix: specializations within each familiy: Some cadherin link to actin adherens junctions. Others link to intermediate filaments desmosomes. Some integrins link to actin actin-linked cell-matrix junctions. Others link to intermediate filaments hemidesmosomes.
