Document Summary

Rnap"s are complex structures with many subunits: some subunits are common to all three rnap"s, some subunits resemble the subunits of dna. Eukaryotic vs. bacterial rna polymerases: eukaryotic rna polymerases require proteins to help position them at the promoter, called sigma factors. 2)these factors fulfill a similar role to the promoters of the bacterial rna polymerases. 3)eukaryotic rna polymerases need to deal with everything. Tata box: the sequence tata highly conserved, found 25-36 bp upstream from start site for transcription. Binding of tbp along with rest of tfiid (includes tafs) Mobilizes the binding of tfiib complex adjacent to tata box. Rnap can now bind in correct orientation at start site. Steps in the initiation of transcription: a subunit binds to the tata box promoter in the minor groove, bending and distorting the dna. 2)this attracts other transcription factors, which help to orient and bind rna to the dna.
