People moving in the context of a well-founded fear of persecution from reasons of race, religion, nationality, social group or political opinion, or the threat of armed conflict, serious disturbances to public order. However, the scale of the current refugee crises, tied with intense forms of racism and right-wing nationalism mean that many states are no longer upholding refugee rights. Like all mobility, migration is a spatial phenomenon involving movement between distant places -- locations imbued with meaning and power. The entire question of migration (experiences, policies, ethics, discourses) is intimately connected to the history of nation-state formation, constructed borders and the territorializing of identities and rights.
