There are many relgiious divisions at this time. During the 16th century, there was a rise in protestantism. Sought to reform the christian church (also known as the reformers) Results in a split or shattering of europe in terms of religious. Many areas dominated by protestantism as well as areas still dominated by christianity. Catholicism is known as the counter-reformation (protestantism being the reformation) There were different beliefs from different sects of all religions. 1) each person has a direct relationship to god, and the hierarchy of clerics that had developed in the catholic church was unnecessary. The catholic response: affirm the importance of clergy and especially the authority of the pope. Protestants believed that popes and ministers should be seen as a leader among equals, no more hierarchy.
