Introduction to baroque art and naturalism in italy. Class begins and the professor spends time going through the syllabus. During this period, the geographical layout of europe was quite different. There is a map of this past layout in the powerpoint as well as in the textbook. In this course, the term prince can refer to any figure that has some sort of power. This can range from popes, to nobels, political leaders, etc. During this period, we will often see art as an expression of power by these. Italy was united linguistically, everyone was speaking some form of italian, and the dialects were not too different from one another. Different regions existed in italy, but they still identified with each other. Papal refers to the catholic church and being a pope. Naturalism will be a recurring theme throughout this course. Generally speaking, naturalism refers to art that seems to reproduce physical appearances.
