Italy was united linguistically, everyone was speaking some form of italian, and the dialects were not too different from one another. Different regions existed in italy, but they still identified with each other. Papal refers to the catholic church and being a pope. Naturalism will be a recurring theme throughout this course. Generally speaking, naturalism refers to art that seems to reproduce physical appearances.
