17th century known as the golden age for spain. Spanish religiosity, specifically catholicism was very orthodox. In spanish art at this time, there is mostly either religious painting or portraiture. Spanish people saw themselves as being chief defenders of catholic faith. Moorish people were heavily persecuted during this time because they were moorish, despite having been christian for centuries. St. jerome and the angel of judgment, jusepe ribera, italy, 1626. St. jerome was ribera"s favourite subject matter. Was an altar piece for church sta trinita delle monache. St. jerome was a doctor of the church. Basically meant that he was an intellectual holy man. He chooses extreme humility in place of the power he held through his intellect and status. Shown in penance, thinking about mortality and life. He is shown in a mystical moment, communing with an angel of judgement. Gesturing up towards the angel flying into the image.
