Art for the papacy (cont"d) / architecture in rome. Today we will focus on works made specifically for the papacy. During the later 16th into the 17th century, many cities were under renovation, but rome had seen the biggest change. The streets were like a little labyrinth. The streets were dirty and crowded, which made the population decline greatly. Sixtus v is a key figure in the renewal of rome. Enacted social and financial reforms and cleaned up the streets. He changed much about the city, including the street size in order to handle the traffic. I. e. , romans and especially romans making pilgrimages to rome. Print of sixtus v alongside images of the public civic projects that he completed. Alexander vii was another key figure in the renewal of rome. He had kept a notebook with his ideas and was very involved with the artists. He had a little model of rome in his apartment.
