Document Summary

Neurulation videos: the 2nd video is important, remember the points. Neural tube formation: this is all following gastrulation, you get induction of neural plate, you get invagination, muscles and bones come from mesoderm. Zippering up starts in the middle in the chick. Somites form on either side of the neural tube. Common birth defects: neural tube closure defects. If neural tube does(cid:374)"t (cid:272)lose properl(cid:455) i(cid:374) de(cid:448)elopi(cid:374)g fetus, the(cid:374) (cid:455)ou (cid:272)a(cid:374) get defe(cid:272)t either i(cid:374) (cid:272)ra(cid:374)ial end, caudal end or somewhere in between. Spina bifida: e(cid:454)(cid:272)ess (cid:374)eural stru(cid:272)ture (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h has(cid:374)"t (cid:272)losed up, neural tube development occurs early and mothers might not know if they are pregnant and might not get enough folic acid. In a developing neural tube, there is a dorsal ventral map, certain genes and certain neurons are only generated in ventral regions versus dorsal regions, shown on slide.
