Document Summary

Specification of uniform cells: this is a morphogen gradient. It means, you can specify a uniform population of cells by secreting these molecules that have a gradient in terms of their concentration. Bicoid gene encodes morphogen: bicoid was first identified by one of those people who won a nobel prize. She looked carefully at how bicoid was able to ge(cid:374)erate these . If you place it where it normally isn"t, you can just make a head right there. So it is both necessary and sufficient for anterior structures (anteriorization of the embryo) In the last experiment, bicoid was placed in the anterior and the posterior and it formed a 2- headed embryo and the posterior structures were lost, the most posterior structure would be in the middle. Its not going straight from head to abdomen, you are getting thorax segments because that"s ho(cid:449) the (cid:373)orphoge(cid:374) gradie(cid:374)ts .
