Depends on what direction you want to take research, what needs to be discovered, and what kind of question you want to ask. The higher the you go on the hierarchical scale, the larger and increasing scale of organisms and its interactions you are looking at. Start at individual and go up the scale to find out more scientific method to study ecology. Start with observations of any kind, then formulate the hypothesis (has to be testable should be able to carry out experiments that supports our hypothesis or can falsify it) Obtain data to find out if the hypothesis is true or false.
