PSY 3171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Confirmation Bias, Structured Interview, Predictive Validity
Document Summary
Main risk of using only personal distress as criteria is risk of overpathologizing. Locus of control and self esteem are examples of cognitive disorders. Social learning theory states that we learn adaptive and maladaptive behaviours from watching others. During a diagnostic assessment, clinicians observe clients mood, rate of speech, and behaviour as mental status exam. Misdiagnosis comorbidity issues: may meet criteria for multiple disorders even if there is one main cause severity issues cultural limitations (last lecture) Classical categorization: yes/no, criteria is all or none, example, jon has all nine symptoms of depression, julie has depression, therefore jon = julie. Dimensional approach: look at variety of thougts, behaviours etc, quantify things on a scale of 1-10, example, job has certain symptoms of various levels, julie has different levels of each symptom. Prototypical approach: yes/no, criteria allows for some non essential variation.
