People can be stressed to current situations in their life that are normal reactions (i. e. exams, a breakup) Diagnosis by a gp, psychiatrist, or psychologist through a hospital allows patients to receive bene ts (insurance, legal issues) Allows person to come to terms with their condition (normalize) Diagnosis can also be stigmatizing, we form beliefs based on these labels. Patients might manifest symptoms to greater extent if they know they have the disorder. Comborbidity (various symptoms might meet criteria for a number of disorders) Tunnel vision (might only focus on one disorder instead of looking at bigger picture. Legal issues (eg. alcohol use disorder is it their fault if they passed out?) Yes/no; you either have it or you don"t. Assume every diagnosis has a clear biological cause. Need to meet all criteria to have disorder. Look and consider wide range of symptoms. Look at the degree to which person exhibits symptoms.
