All senses begin when child is born. Behavior of child tells us what they can sense; like or dislike. Must be able to distinguish if they respond differently. Babies will look longer at something they prefer: attending to something. Habituation occurs when baby stops looking/sucking/low physiological response: new stimuli will make baby attentive again, if babies can learn during habituation test, then there will be a new attention to the new stimuli. Within 6 days baby can differentiate smell. Babies can distinguish sweet, salty, sour, bitter. Babies can sense touch (reflexes and pain: rooting reflex is touching baby"s face and it turns and opens mouth start hearing in 7-8th month after conception. Visual perception retina are flat: see world in 2d. Depth is inferred from cues in environment. Monocular/pictorial cues with one eye can see: linear perspective with two parallel lines converging, arrangement of objects needs to be learned.
