Wednesday, january 27, 2016: infancy: physical and cognitive development. Process by which the brain receives, selects, modi es, and organizes incoming nerve impulses that are the result of physical stimulation. How will we measure what they sense: ex. Observe and record infants" responses to the stimuli. If infants consistently prefer one over the other or respond differently to the stimuli, they must be able to distinguish between the two. Repeatedly present infants with the same stimuli. Beginning: strong orienting response (attention: physiological/behavioural. Dishabituation: over time infants are familiarized > drop in orienting response (bored) At test, change in stimuli > regain attention to new stimuli. Newborns have a keen sense of smell. Recognition of familiar odour: own amniotic uid. Recognition of mothers" odour (just 6 days old) Newborns have a highly developed sense of taste. Start hearing at 7 to 8 months after conception. Newborns can detect direction of sound source, sensitive to loudness, and recognize mom"s voice and language.
