In past, causes of death were pneumonia tb or inluenza unil 1950"s: now, main causes of death is heart disease, cancer, stroke, our bodies wear out. Plagues were common throughout history: they didn"t know what caused the disease so their cures and treatments failed, they thought it was curse from god, spontaneous or miasma theory- bad smells. Post natal infecions 30% of death rate. Agosino bassi proved germ theory of disease in 1844. John snow disproved miasma theory in 1854- he looked at a patern of disease and traced it back to a water source in the city. He made a map of cholera infecions to idenify the source. Louis pasteur developed pasteurizaion in 1864- heat milk then cool it down to kill bacteria. Trypan red selecively colors trypanosomes but leave blood cells uncolored. He wondered if he could atach a poison to that material to kill trypanosomes and not other cells.
