Important to have a reliable mechanism to elicit a behaviour. Effect of the growth of the testes by having an increase in the light level. In order to show this , there was a short day cycle and a long day cycle. There was no growth in the testes in the 8l:16d because they didn"t have a period that had light during the second half of the photoperiod. There was growth in the testes in the 8l:28d because light occurred during the second half of the photoperiod ; this tells the body to start preparing for the reproductive period. When light occurs is what"s important and not the amount of light. In some cases , light is not the most relevant cue for an environmental stimulus. Precipitation can be a limiting factor for plants cause they won"t bloom and this is needed in reproduction. Presence of rain is the greatest stimulus for the onset of behaviour.
