With light microscopes we can see up to mitochondria (1um). Eukaryote cells usually do not get below 5 um, therefore we can use light to see all eukaryotic cells. Mitochondria were once parasites that developed relationship with eukaryotes. They are around the same size as bacteria. We can actually resolve the structure, and to clearly identify the structures we see. Light refracts off of air or liquid, this is why we can only see things to an extent. We would have to use electrons instead of photons of light as microscopes to see things that are smaller than a bacterium (such as proteins, ribosomes, virus etc). With eyes we may resolve things up to 1mm. Standard upright microscope, which has a specimen condenser under specimen, this focuses the light onto the specimen. 2nd area where the light is focused is at the position of the objective; raising them up or down to increase or decrease the magnification.
