Sets us apart from all other animals. Can be argued that its our most important organ. Product of evolution and source of uniqueness, especially in regards to social. Glia don"t actually do the communication, but (cid:498)glia(cid:499) is greek for (cid:498)glue(cid:499), they structure also do housekeeping. Look at it from a bottom up approach. As you move up the brain the structures are generally newer adaptations. Top brain is only present in higher mammals, will not be seen in reptiles. Our brain stem looks very different from other animals. Birds have highly developed cerebellum, but lack top brain. Each portion of it has a distinct role. Amygdala is basically the switchboard of emotion control and memory sorting. Motivations can vary, can be food, sex, parenting. The cortex is a very thin layer (10mm). it is the most recently evolved portion of the brain. Minor differences between left and right hemispheres, some people have drastic differences between the two.
