Abrupt change: an abrupt change is a rapid shift from one state (or condition) to another, no pattern. Change impact habitat in unique ways: fire is a natural part of ecosystems. Recently burned areas can be important habitat for certain species: moose forage in recently burned areas (nappi et al, harvesting can alter ecosystems in unnatural ways. Over- harvesting can removed important habitat: land conversion from forest to agriculture or development leads to habitat loss! Detecting abrupt change: two step process, first, we must detect where abrupt changes have occurred, second, we must identify what type of disturbance it is. Detecting: how will we detect abrupt change, using landsat images, how do we detect where abrupt changes have occurred, we look for sharp changes in spectral signatures, ndvi (inferred to red) Shifting agriculture: pattern derived from thins, road, small roads to side, timber is pulled out or burned out, plant beside roads.
