Document Summary

This is a broad definition for the period between the medieval city (1450) and the industrial revolution (1700) The renaissance brought about: centralisation of power. This brought about stability in metropolitan areas: improvement in agriculture. This is a fundamental condition for urbanisation: discovery of the americas. This led to the generation of wealth for europeans: led to a new way of thinking. This resulted in the development of science, philosophy and rationality. It differed from other urban forms because of its features. The renaissance city led to the emergence of big avenues and straight roads. These features did not exist in the medieval period. The idea behind this was to create an urban form that was less congested and less dense than the medieval city. This allowed easier access to the urban areas which demonstrated the effectiveness of the rulers. The creation of open spaces was a key feature of the renaissance city.
