The way we structure society is the way we do business. Efficiency-: optimum means to end-the most optimum way to get from one point to another. Essentially the fastest way possible (eg. drive thru). The more people we bring into prison the most people we bring into the system. Predictability: expectations-we know what to expect. We have expectations, no matter where you are, you know what to expect. Everyone gets the same sentence regardless the circumstance. Control: technology-replacing humans with technology to control people (eg. surveillance). Greater surveillance over people committing crimes and those in the system (eg. Consequences-we have the opposite of what we expect. More and more people going to prison for first time non-violent offences for long periods of time. 3 trends: new discourses-about punishment and people. Try to calculate possible risks: new objectives-efficient control of the system.
