Document Summary
Autokinetic studies are illustrations of: how far a light moves in a uniformly dark environment, gender differences in judgement of perceived movement, cross-culture and cross-generational comparison, how other people can be a source of information. Why do we conform: the need to be accepted, normative social influence, conforming to other people in order to be liked and accepted by them, asch (1950) even when a situation is not ambiguous, people still conform. Resisting conformity: the best way to prevent ourselves from following the wrong social norm, becoming aware of normative influence, taking action (skepticism toward groups, even our own) 2: idiosyncrasy credits the credit you earn from conforming with your group and then the group allows you to deviate from them (because you are a good member) The positive aspects of conformity: conforming to basic social norms is required if we want to live in an orderly society, citizens are expected a certain level of conformity.
