Conformity definition: conformity is a change in behaviour or belief as a result of real or imagined pressure from others (kiesler & kiesler, 1969) Factors related to conformity: nature of the task, ambiguity, difficult. Individual differences: conformity varies in different stages of life span: childhood, adolescence & old age, group size, the more people that conform the more that follow. Resisting conformity: the best way to prevent ourselves from following the wrong social norm, becoming aware of normative influence, taking action (skepticism toward groups, even our own) The positive aspects of conformity: conforming to basic social norms is required if we want to live in an orderly society, citizens are expected a certain level of conformity. Why the majority does not always rule: minority influence, serge moscovici (1986,1994) argues that minority can influence the behaviour or beliefs of the majority, the key is consistency, dissenters are more effective if they are:
