Document Summary

Know b6 and panthothenic acid formation of coenzyme a. In foods niacin can be bound covalently to other macronutrients. Bound to complex carbohydrates (ef: fibre) = niacytin. Bound to small peptides = niacinogens: niacinogens are the primary form of niacin found in corn. Corn must be chemically treated with bases (eg: lime water) to improve bioavailability of niacin. Pellagra (niacin deficiency) results in populations consuming high corn-based diets that don"t pro(cid:272)ess the (cid:272)orn (cid:449)ith (cid:271)asi(cid:272) solutions. In the liver, nad, and nadp can be synthesized from tryptophan biologically possible but highly inefficient. Inefficient pathway: 1 mg niacin is produced from the ingestion of 60 mg of dietary tryptophan: role of niacin (as nad and nadph) in redox reactions. Nad+ = oxidized nad (dominant pool, 10-fold excess over nadh) mainly due to the activity of the electron transport chain. Nadph = reduced nadp (dominant pool, 10-fold excess over nadp) regenerated/produced by pentose phosphate pathway (hexose monophophast shunt)
