Before 1920"s: daing was regulated by chaperones. It was considered a serious act, with full commitment to marriage. Daing became rite of passage to understand gender roles, status, and idenity. Four stages of daing: casual daing, steady, daing engagement, marriage. Men used to be iniiators now women have more direct role. Use of technology, having fun, and meeing new people. Two individuals who are atending a funcion together. Purpose is for entertainment, not just choosing a life partner. Connected to social status: single vs. relaionship status. Skipper and nass (1968) ideniied four funcions of daing: gaining status, socializaion, recreaion, mate selecion. Sex should occur only in marriage: permissiveness with afecion. Sex is okay if two people are not married, but in love: permissiveness without afecion. Love does not have to exist for a person to have premarital sex: double standard. Women pracice permissiveness with afecion, men pracice permissiveness without afecion.
