One of the 4 major subfields of political science. The focus as the terms suggest is global affairs. There are multiple theories/approaches to how law and politics should be understood globally. Recognizes the relative power of states is not equal. General idea: smaller less powerful states would ally themselves together to balance the greater power of the one state. Balance alliances would always reflect the power structures reality. Balance of power fails because of various divided powers, all having diverse interests. Throughout 18th century europe, the balance of power was seen through various alliances of countries during many wars, example: The balance of power approach could be blamed ww1 and therefore a new model was necessary too many treaties forced a stress test on balance. Collection of various states that all had an interest in preserving peace. Failure in the league of nations, un. Successes in nato got rid of soviet union, aka prevent ussr aggression.
